Well the weather hasn't exactly been 'kind' to us so far in 2013, but the freezing conditions could actually be a blessing in disguise. Last year was universally agreed to be 'The Year of the Slug', and we'd prefer it if we don't get a repeat! Hopefully a prolonged spell of very cold weather will kill off some of the pests which plagued gardeners last year, meaning that we won't have such a battle on our hands to keep the crops healthy. A hard frost can also help to break up the soil, and a layer of snow over winter peas and beans can actually insulate them from harsher weather. Always look on the bright side!
